The Annual General Meeting of the Astronomical Society of University of Peradeniya was held on the 28th of March , 2025 at the departmental premises.
Astronomical society successfully organized an observation camp to provide participants with fundamental knowledge of telescope handling and astrophotography. The event aimed to enhance practical skills and deepen interest in observational astronomy. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the night sky, capture celestial objects, and gain hands-on experience with astronomical equipment.
On February 28, 2025, we organized a telescope workshop to provide students with hands-on experience in astronomical observation. The session included practical demonstrations on telescope assembly, alignment, and celestial object tracking.
The Astro-Photography Competition, organized by the Astronomical Society of the University of Peradeniya, invites astronomy enthusiasts and photography lovers to submit their best captures of the night sky across various categories. This exciting competition provides a platform for students to showcase their talent, creativity, and passion for both astronomy and photography.
The guest lecture on February 19, 2025, was delivered by Dr. Madusha Gunawardhana, an award-winning researcher from the University of Sydney and a core member of the ESO’s VLT/MUSE and VST/4MOST galaxy survey teams. The talk, held at the Physics Lower Theatre, was organized by the Astronomical Society of the University of Peradeniya. Dr. Gunawardhana discussed evidence for a non-universal stellar initial mass function (IMF) in star-forming galaxies, highlighting recent extragalactic studies that challenge the traditional assumption of a universal IMF. The session covered various techniques used to infer IMF variations and their implications for galaxy evolution studies
Culminating the all of the work done by the society, bringing together astronomy enthusiasts, the society successfully organized the ‘Vespera-2024’, Astro Night, an evening filled with engaging activities. The event featured telescope viewing sessions, interactive demonstrations, and events such as the astrophotography contest, paper rocket competition, and water rocket competition.
